The Nilgiris
Ooty
Queen of the Nilgiri hill stations — colonial cottages, tea gardens and cool nights all year.
Why buy in Ooty
The Nilgiris' best-known hill station — tea estates, the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and a cooler, drier climate than the Western Ghats coffee belt. Land here is Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district, which carries its own eco-sensitive-zone and forest-boundary rules given how much of the plateau is protected — check this early, not after you've fallen for a view.
Getting around
Ooty town is well served for a hill station — hospitals, schools, a functioning market — and most properties are a manageable drive from the centre. Coimbatore, about 2.5–3 hours away, is the nearest major access point and airport.
Best time to visit
September to early June, avoiding the southwest monsoon's peak (June–August) when Ooty gets genuinely cold and wet. April–June draws the domestic tourist season, so property viewings are easier outside those months.
Climate & best months
Best months to visit: February, March, January. Driest is February (~20 mm); wettest is October (~210 mm).
